If you’ve noticed a dull ache, heaviness, or visible enlarged veins, you may have a varicocele, an enlargement of veins within the scrotum. At Medical Vascular Partners in Austin, double board-certified diagnostic and interventional radiologists Dr. Rajiv Srinivasa and Dr. Taylor Maloney provide minimally invasive treatments to protect your long-term reproductive health.
Overview
Normally, your testicles produce sperm and testosterone while being carefully regulated at a temperature lower than your core body temperature. A network of veins called the pampiniform plexus drains blood away from the testicles and helps cool incoming arterial blood. This cooling process is essential for healthy sperm production and proper testicular function. A varicocele occurs when these veins become enlarged, allowing blood to pool rather than return to the heart. This backward or sluggish blood flow increases pressure and can raise the temperature around the testicle. Over time, this may lead to symptoms such as a dull ache, heaviness, visible “rope-like” veins, or even fertility concerns. Varicoceles most commonly develop during puberty and are more frequently found on the left side due to anatomical differences.
Symptoms of Varicocele
Many men with a varicocele have no symptoms at all. However, when symptoms do occur, they can range from mild discomfort to concerns about fertility. You may notice:
- A dull, aching pain in the scrotum
- A feeling of heaviness or dragging in the testicle
- Enlarged, twisted veins that feel like a “bag of worms”
- Swelling in the scrotum
- Pain that worsens after standing or physical activity
- One testicle appearing smaller than the other
- Difficulty fathering a child or abnormal semen analysis results
Treatment for Varicocele
At Medical Vascular Partners, we take a patient-centered, physician-led approach to treating varicoceles. Not every varicocele requires intervention. If you are experiencing pain, testicular shrinkage, or fertility concerns, your physician will carefully evaluate your symptoms, exam findings, and imaging to determine whether treatment is appropriate. Our goal is always to provide the most effective, minimally invasive solution in an outpatient setting. When treatment is needed, we perform varicocele embolization. This image-guided procedure is done through a tiny catheter inserted into a vein, typically in the groin or neck. Using advanced fluoroscopic guidance, your physician identifies the enlarged veins and places small coils or a medical solution to redirect blood flow away from the varicocele. By blocking the abnormal veins, pressure is relieved, blood flow normalizes, and overheating of the testicle is reduced.
Advantages of Varicocele Embolization
